Cod aka Codling

Post by TimOH »

The Cod is a cold water species so, while we catch them during the summer, they're more likely to be caught inshore from beaches and in harbours during the cold months of the year. Successful Cod fishing means keeping you lure/bait at or fractionally above, the seabed.

So what's the difference between a Cod and a Codling? Any fish under 5lb is a Codling, they're not a separate species!

ID tips? The top jaw protrudes, there is a barbule under the lower jaw, the lateral line is curved and the flanks speckled.

Fish that have lived their life in weed (called kelpie Cod in Cork) can be a different colour, check out this example from Nigel Stobie!
