Stickleback 3 spined

Post by TimOH »

Use a #20 or smaller, it is possible to LRF them with fake maggots. I find them near the bank, launch the kayak and sight fish for them using half a maggot. Males have red bellies and seem to be larger but I haven't been able to land one from the kayak yet.

Do you use these as bait?

I use them to annoy other species hunters 😉

Have caught them before in coarse fishing species hunts, finding them in a waterway is the big challenge. used to be abundant in almost every still water location I visited but seem quite scarce these days.
I found the best method for catching them was to put a single squat (Tiny magot, 5 to 6 mm long) on a size 22 or 24 hook under a tiny float. Leaving any weight tight under the float allowing the bait to sink under its own weight.
As to finding suitable small bait, the brown bin for food waste is wonderful.
